Why Microsoft won’t allow Xbox One and PC cross-platform play via Gaijin Entertainment CEO

The Xbox One is technically capable of supporting cross-platform play, but Microsoft is not currently allowing it, according to War Thunder developer Gaijin Entertainment CEO Anton Yudintsev via gamespot.com“Microsoft is not allowing cross-play completely; which means [War Thunder] cannot be on Xbox One,” Yudintsev told GameSpot at GDC last week in San Francisco. Why would Microsoft block cross-platform play? According to Yudintsev, Microsoft needs to certify game servers as a means to ensure a “good experience” for all players. This isn’t possible under the current circumstances, Yudintsev said.Xbox boss Phil Spencer said previously that cross-platform play between Xbox One and PC “makes sense,” teasing that he’s “not allowed to leak things,” suggesting this feature may actually be in the works. We’ve reached out to a Microsoft representative for a further comment.Cross-platform play is vital for a game like War Thunder because the install base of new consoles like the Xbox One and PS4 is too small for players to have an enjoyable experience, Yudintsev said.

The PS4 version of War Thunder, available only in Europe right now, will support cross-play beginning as early as next month, Yudintsev said. The reason this feature has yet to go live comes down to an unspecified updating issue that Yudintsev said Sony engineers are working to fix right now.

As for why Gaijin Entertainment elected to side with Sony instead of Microsoft, Ydintsev said it’s because Sony is significantly more accommodating to indie developers, specifically those who make free-to-play games.“Sony is much more open to indie developers and free-to-play games in general. So Sony has been in the free-to-play market for a few years already, they started on the PlayStation 3,” Yudintsev said. “Not only that, but Microsoft has a lot of unspoken limitations like if you want to make a free-to-play game you have to talk to an account manager and there are no set of rules; you need to communicate them; and the rule depends on the [individual account manager]. If he likes your game you get approval, if he doesn’t you don’t get approval.”“Sony is much more open to indie developers and free-to-play games in general” — YudintsevYudintsev said one individual Microsoft account manager decides your game’s fate. This person is the only who says “This game is good, this game is bad,” Yudintsev said.“

I don’t think it’s a correct assumption that anyone can be the one who can choose which game is good and which is bad because each game is for a specific audience,” he said.Yudintsev said Minecraft is a good example of the faults in Microsoft’s indie program. “It’s a very fun game, a lot of people play it, and nowadays everyone understands it’s a very good game. But it would not be happening [first] on Xbox Live.”“When it was released it was strange…it had very, let’s say, specific graphics and not much of the gameplay,” Yudintsev said, referencing the game’s alpha release. “It suddenly became very popular and after that it appears on Xbox 360 as well. But it could not happen the other way. There’s no way, I am pretty sure, that Microsoft would ever approve that game to be on Xbox Live Arcade before it became popular on the PC.”

Yudintsev stressed that Microsoft’s policies for indie games are beginning to change for the better with the arrival of the ID@Xbox program. But he made clear that Microsoft still has a ways to go to catch up to Sony.“[Microsoft] has to change and they will change,” Yudintsev said. “They key is that they understand the necessesity of change, so they will. We’ll see. I hope we will be [on Xbox One] some day as well. I have nothing against the platform itself especially because I’m not one of those guys who worries about which is better [Xbox One or PS4]. I don’t care. It’s just the hardware. At the end of the day it’s only about the quality of the game and the gameplay experience.”

Yudintsev isn’t the first to speak on Microsoft indie polices. Recently a representative of sony Adam Boyes was criticized for his remark on twitter in regard to Xbox One’s Indie Game Parity clause. What do you think about Xbox One’s Cross game play policies? Do you think Microsoft will make the necessary changes? And are you interested in titles likes Titanfall for example to be playable  for PC and console players cohesively? Comment below and let us know.

12 Reasons the 3DS is the Best System Out Now … And 6 Why It Isn’t

Home stretch, folks!   The final part of our little list of why the 3DS is the best system out now… and other reasons where it badly needs to improve.

First, reasons 1-4 on why it’s awesome!

Perfect Backwards Compatibility. Many gamers were annoyed to find that the Xbox One and PS4 launched with no backwards compatibility—indeed, something very shocking in a day and age when quite literally everything else is—from tablets, to phones, to PCs, to the DS and Wii and PS Vita (sort of).  The 3DS is not only backwards-compatible, but arguably the best at it.If you want to play a DS game on the 3DS, you just pop it in and play it.  Want to play a DSi game?  Download it and open it.  It’s a cinch.  Even the 3DS’s console brother, the Wii U, doesn’t do back-compatibility this well as it requires a cumbersome second menu and the shops are nonsensically still separate.  The DSi games are merely sprinkled throughout the eShop, handily mingling with the newer 3DS eShop titles.  It is almost perfect.  It has only two failings:  DSi games aren’t saved to, or playable from the SD card for some reason—which means they take up internal memory.  The other issue is that putting the 3DS to sleep with a DS or DSi game powered actually deactivates StreetPass features.  Bummer!   But outside of these issues, the 3DS is leading the charge in backwards compatibility that even the massively-powered PS4 can’t match.3.

3ds is better

Actual, Entirely New Games and GenresGiven by how often people in entertainment (video games, TV, movies, music, etc.) just lazily copy one another attempting to glide on the success of someone else, it seems inventing new ideas is nearly impossible.  And indeed, if the new generation of gaming is any indication, little to no effort has been made by anyone to actually attempt to come up with actual new concepts or ideas.  At the end of the day, the XBO, PS4, and even the Wii U are largely designed to play the exact same games as the previous generation or two—but with better graphics.  Not to create entirely new genres or concepts or to actually expand gaming.  Twitch and the Miiverse are nice, but they don’t actually change or advance the concept of video games. But incredibly, the 3DS has managed to do this.  They may be small, but the Mii Plaza games are entirely new concepts.  Something that really couldn’t be done with previous gaming technology.  These games are largely (but not entirely) dependent on taking the 3DS out and meeting other people to advance.

Again, the Denpa Men, while it may be technically possible on the Vita, makes perfect sense on the 3DS where a primary goal is to travel to new Wi-Fi hotspots to find new Denpa Men—largely because the 3DS is simply better in the portable category.  Then there are titles like Bravely Default and Fire Emblem Awakening that allow players to meet and share weapons, items, and even attacks.  Not only is it allowing the invention of new games, it is revamping classic ones.  All because you carry it around with you and the systems communicate when they meet.2.  Properly Done PortabilityIf there is one thing in gaming to which Nintendo is undeniably the master, its portable gaming.

The 3DS is no different—but has actually managed to improve upon the concept of a portable system.  The 3DS practically demands that you take it with you.  Both clamshell models (the original and the XL) fold and fit neatly into pretty much any pocket for on-the-go gaming.  Both are also quite durable in construction to boot, which means they can handle being carried around. Beyond that, though, you’ll really want to take it everywhere for the software.   Street Pass allows players to meet one another in up to 12 games to augment or even play some of the content.   Play Coins are earned by walking around, and those can be spent in several different games to unlock any number of items, stages, or other things.
